The 10 minute podcast primer!

Networking is the name of the game! With so little resources and so much to do we can all stand to share. For those who are interested in meeting with other podcasters there are two in the Seattle area (I am still looking for folks in Tacoma)

There is a Meetup group for podcasting in Seattle that is continually putting out great information...and it is also fun just to see what folks are 'casting about.

Seattle Podcasters

There is also the Seattle Podcasting Network.

The Seattle Podcasting Network posted this today and I thought it would be of interested!

What if!!!

Thinking about Podcasting, Course-casting, blogging and other means of sharing is so exciting! We have such a creative campus, all it takes is someone asking "What if..."

Imagine if we had ....

True "anywhere, anytime learning"!

Campus Events and the Campus Calendar 'wired' so we could all hear what we missed.

Or if students could create their own expressions of learning...

Classes sharing with each other and the world...

Departments share with the world...

And what is so wonderful is that we have, on this campus, everything we need to make it happen. This can never be a 'one department' project....and who would ever want it to be so.

Guess who is using Skype!

Did you know that all of our US Representatives for the 109th Congress have Skype numbers! Check it out.

Amazing timing issues

This came out just today from the Seattle [Catalystnews] March Updates from Catalyst
This is a more in-depth description of what I linked in an earlier post about podcasting outcomes!

An Evaluation of Recent UW Podcasting Efforts Now Available

Recently the Seattle campus introduced podcasting in several classes in Kane
Hall. This report presents trends from a short student survey that evaluated the
use of podcasting in these courses. It offers suggestions and raises questions
about future uses of this technology to support teaching and learning. An online
report is available at http://catalyst.washington.edu/projects/

And my buddies back at the Office of Educational Assessment put out this report y'all might find interesting, it covers education and technology as a whole.

Alice and Paul record static and bake pies

Last night Paul and I played with various method of recording Skype calls anticipating the need/desire of faculty and students to record and share interviews for course work.

Paul is going to put together the sample for the Wednesday meeting and we will keep notes on what worked and didn't work.

I was using Pamela and had it set to record in stereo. I then pulled the .wav file into Audacity and split the track out and was then able to do a little clean up on the tracks.

Things I didn't like about Pamela: I didn't like the fact that I couldn't 'see' what was happening with the volume. It wasn't until afterwards that I knew that I was topping out the mic and Paul was too soft. Most of that I fixed in post-production. Another option is to run a test with the other person, listen to the levels and then continue.

Things I like about Pamela: It was very simple. Once you get the system installed and the audio and speaker settings set it is a matter of calling, clicking the button and that is it! The sound quality was good (until Paul started playing with wires!!! ;-) and it was easy to manage the file afterwards.

Ha! Pamela can do muli-track

It would be great to get Computer Services in on the conversation about software for simple recording of interviews. I'm down to Skylook and Pamela...

I dug a little deeper into Pamela for Skype (for recording interviews) and found in the tutorial that you can set Pamela to record in two channels....

Call Recording Mode

By default, Pamela will record the audio in and the audio out audio stream together both in one single channel. For podcasting, blogging or other audio processing needs, you can optionally select to Save sound in stereo mode. The audio in (speaker) and audio out (microphone) streams will then be saved in separate channels.

Interviews with Skype

Paul did some investigation and came up with the following techniques for recording interview via Skype.

From Blogarithums and also version 2

I also found an article on Unbound Spiral. And something fun to do with Skype on the desktop, iPod radio.

Another option is 'virtual cables' but somehow or another we have to make this simple! For individuals wanting to make a simple recording of an interview then maybe a purchased tool like HotRecorder, Skylook or Pamela would do the job. These are all single track recorders.

Idea fodder!

Paul sent this to the group today and I wanted to capture it an make sure we had it were everyone could find it again! And I really want to see the "Lost" vidcast!

Hey group,

I remember Dana mentioning about wanting to see these streaming files. The
sessions are pretty boring but I thought they'd reach a few more people than
what we did last year: check out a DVD from Carol Hert. I'm trying to provide
for cross platform users as well as audio only. Down the road will have to consolidate into one format - mp4 viewed with iTunes would do that!
Also, if you get a chance, go to iTunes music store and type: "UWT News"
to see a couple of tests that Mike and I published.

Anyway, if for nothing else than for the potential as podcasting/streaming on
campus...

UW Seattle has a smooth podcast request setup!

You may have already seen this but Classroom Support Service has a very nice, very friendly request form for podcasting services on campus.

We talked recently about the concrete outcomes of the research the Pamela and other are doing so I wanted to include some of those articles. Click on the image to read the report or abstract.
