Need help playing with recording interviews

If there is anyone out there that is interested I need to practice recording an interview using Skype! All I need you to do in install Skype , get a microphone connected to your computer, and we can give it a try. THIS will be a really cool tool for instructors who want interviews recorded for their class. Skype is a free "voice over internet protocol" (VoIP) tool so once we are done with the test you can get granny hooked up and call her for free.

Following along together, here are the steps I am going to attempt for this test! (attempt being the operative word)

(1) SET UP AUDACITY

Get Audacity from audacity.sourceforge.net; Run Audacity; Go to File -> Preferences -> Digital I/O -> Recording and choose a Digital Audio-class device rather than an “Input”-class device (which will replace microphone input with combined microphone **and** speaker recording); choose to record two channels of stereo; finally, close Preferences, and choose Wave Out Mix” as the source of signal on the main window of Audacity;

(2) SET UP THE SOUND DRIVER

Go to Control Panel -> Sounds and Audio Devices -> Volume -> Advanced and make sure the microphone is not muted; you may also want to click on Advanced settings for the microphone and check MIC Boost” to amplify your voice.

(3) USE AUDACITY AND SKYPE

During a conversation, you can start recording in Audacity at any point (big red button ); Audacity allows to export recordings in WAV, MP3, and OGG formats; for MP3s, you will need to find lame_enc.dll on Google (LAME is an excellent MP3 encoder).

Creating a CD of tools

At our meeting we talked about creating a CD of tools that could go into the check out kits with the digital recorders and microphones. This could be laid out in folders with an html 'home page' for easy navigation. What about...

I don't have the tutorials that I created for the NASA After School Astronomy Clubs here at work so when I get home I will re-edit this blog entry and add them in for you to review.

Cheers!

Microphones

Found reference to these microphones for small digital recorders....

I purchased a set of Lansing 302i and tried them out last night...they seem to work fine but I must have a small head because they didn't fit as snug as I would like them.

Also, I discovered the trick to inexpensive iRivers...eBay.

Dr. Gay is booked!

We have a date! Dr. Gay will be here on Monday April 10th pretty much all day long. As it turns out she had money left over from her Alaska trip so Oceanside Photo and Telescope is paying her way here!

I was thinking that it would be good to not only invite our own faculty but to also invite faculty from the surrounding feeder community colleges and feeder high schools!

A University tour as a podcast!

Okay, this one is cool especially because I love the Tartan Podcast and it was so "random" that he was off doing a tour of the new Saltire Center at Caledonia University but he did it soooo well and the center sound so cool that I had to share it with you.

So go look at the Tartan Podcast site and look around, and listen.

What do you need to podcast

Check list for podcasting...

In order to podcast you will need to learn a few skills in this order:

  1. How to record your audio and save it to an .mp3 file.

  2. How to create an RSS file which holds the “directions” for sending your file when a user’s program like iPodder requests it, or the software to do it

  3. How to write the “directions” that are inside the RSS file, or the software

  4. How to upload the RSS “feed” and your .mp3 file

  5. How to validate that the file is written correctly and will send the file correctly.
